What are B vitamins and what do they do?

B vitamins are water-soluble nutrients that have established required roles in cellular energy production, which is a complex process.  B vitamins are mandatory cofactors at various stages of carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism in the cells of your body.  Ultimately, metabolism of food leads to cellular energy release in the form of ATP, which is then used to fuel your body's many chemical reactions. Not only utilized as substrates in cellular metabolism, B vitamins are important for healthy red blood cell formation and function, nervous system function, and to help maintain healthy homocysteine levels.

What are the benefits of taking a B complex supplement?

B complex supplements address potential nutrient gaps in your diet to support and maintain cellular energy processes, nervous system function and red blood cell formation. Individuals eating vegetarian or vegan diets, who have malabsorption conditions, or who may otherwise have increased B vitamin needs should consider taking a B complex supplement to support their health.

What foods provide B vitamins?

All eight B vitamins are found in a variety of foods. Fortified cereal is a good source of several B vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6 and folic acid. Whole grain cereals, lean pork, nuts and legumes are all good sources of thiamin. Avocado, fish and broccoli are good sources of pantothenic acid. In addition to fortified cereal, folic acid can also be found in green leafy vegetables and citrus fruit juices. Egg yolk, liver and yeast are rich sources of biotin. Vitamin B12 can only be found in animal products, such as meat, poultry and fish (including shellfish).
